Youth Ambassadors for Peace

The purpose of this project is to spread peace and create awareness while empowering youths and establishing leadership opportunities for those who wish to get involved in a region largely overlooked by foreign attention.

Founder:

Adam Hummel is a third year law student at the University of Windsor in Canada. He is originally from Toronto, where he completed his undergraduate studies at York University doing a double major B.A. Honors in political science and history. At York, he was highly involved in student activism, dealing particularly with African affairs and sustainable development.

This is his story:

The Youth Ambassadors for Peace is the culmination of my desire to get involved in a peace movement somewhere in Africa. In May 2009 I traveled to Kenya to bring together three tribes, the Kisii, Luo and Kalejin tribes, who had been heavily impacted by the post election violence in Kenya following the 2007 general election.

As a result of a prior trip to Kenya I became aware of the fact that the government was doing little to try to combat negative elements such as tribalism and youth idleness as they manifested themselves on the ground, and so I thought that I may be able to use the connections that I had made there to start my own project aimed at targeting these negative elements.

In my short time on the ground in Kenya I trained 25 youths from three different villages to become ambassadors in each others’ communities, established an intertribal football tournament, a drama group, a chicken farm from which eggs are taken and donated to members of these communities recently diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, and also four high school peace clubs. These projects have been entirely independent and have succeeded through my own fundraising efforts as well as the efforts of those Kenyan youths who have found empowerment through these projects.

This project is also the first time that these three tribes have come together to participate in a project of this kind. The goal of this project is to help build a sustainable peace in Kenya through youth empowerment, the eradication of tribalism and playing sports!

These are the projects that have come out of this initiative:

Adam Hummel Coexistence Football Tournament
Youth Ambassadors for Peace
High School Peace Club
Adam’s Youth Group
Adam’s Poultry Project
Testimonials

To ensure that this project is a success, we require financial donations, possibly donations for another football tournament, but we need the word to be spread!

How far a dollar can go:

$1 = 70 Kenyan Shillings
1 cup of tea in the village = 5 Shillings = 7 cents
Taxi ride from one village to another = 80 shillings = approximately $1.15

Every bit of money goes A LONG way, and that is the reason for the success we have seen with such limited resources. We need assistance to keep going, and if you’re able to help then please do!
